40 minutes after the discovery of the starling, the male and female return. The male enters the hole and then exits rapidly, possibly along with the intruder. Subsequently the female is able to start bringing twigs and entering the vacated hole.

Is this bird, which is trying to drag a twig in sideways, either: (a) stupid or (b) smart? Eric Wilson points out that this technique might be to wedge the twig in to make a more secure structure.
