Baiting progress: Autumn 2010
Three cycles of baiting are carried out each year, with the first one being in late winter. Within two months a second one is done, which is only partial, as many bait stations still have adequate quantities of bait left from the initial baiting. In early summer a third baiting is done of just the first 150 metres of bait stations on the lines that are on the periphery of the Ark.
Autumn 2010 sees a change from this cycle. Concern at the possible spread of the PTA disease which affects kauri roots has lead to a decision to replace the late winter initial baiting with an earlier autumn one, when soil conditions are dry and less conducive to spread of the disease on volunteers' boots.
The above map shows progress so far with this baiting.
